Course Description
The Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) course at Smith Creek fulfills the Maryland State Police training requirement necessary to purchase, rent, or receive a handgun in the State of Maryland. This 4-hour HQL training class combines classroom instruction with a required live-fire exercise to meet all state-mandated standards for new handgun owners.
Students receive detailed instruction on Maryland firearm laws, handgun purchase regulations, safe transport requirements, and legal storage responsibilities. The course also covers handgun operation, safety fundamentals, loading and unloading procedures, ammunition basics, and supervised range time to demonstrate safe firearm handling.
Our Maryland HQL training is designed for first-time handgun buyers, new firearm owners, and Maryland residents seeking clear guidance through the licensing process. All required training materials, firearms and ammunition. Eye protection and hearing protection are available at the range for rent if needed.
Upon completion, students receive the training and live fire documentation required to apply through the Maryland State Police online licensing system. HQL training is valid for three years and must be completed prior to submitting your Handgun Qualification License application.
